Our Town NNEWI:
Nnewi has a population of approximately 130,000 residents. The town is located east of the Niger River, and about 22 kilometers south east of Onitsha in Anambra State, Nigeria. Nnewi was founded in the fourteenth century, and consists of four Quarters (large villages) and these four Quarters of Nnewi are Otolo, Uruagu, Umudim, and Nnewichi.
Nnewi has its own local government council (Nnewi North Local Government) and has a locally elected council.
The Agbo-edo and Nkwo triangle are the main town squares that are common to the four quarters or villages that comprise Nnewi. There is also an active town union called the Nzuko-Ora Nnewi.
It is a forum through which adult Nnewi indigenes (18 years or older) can contribute to the development of Nnewi. This union was set up to encourage and promote the establishment of structures and facilities that will promote and improve the quality of life of people resident at Nnewi people. Each quarter or village that comprises Nnewi has an Obi as its leader.
The Igwe is the senior leader of Nnewi and Obi of Otolo based upon the custom of Nnewi that ranks the villages in a prearranged order. The four Obis are shown below:
